‘My lady?’

Lady Mary’s eyelids lifted to leave the merest slit for her to look through.

‘Who gave you that gift?’

‘I do not know. I found it in my bedchamber when I returned from a walk.’

‘When? What day?’

‘I do not remember.’

‘What made you use the contents to wash with?’

‘I liked the scent.’

‘Did someone tell you it was an additive for washing water?’ When the question was answered with sullen silence, Rosamond came to a decision. Lady Mary could not protect herself if she did not know she was in danger. ‘The truth is, my lady, that a bottle of that shape customarily holds a potion meant to be swallowed.’

‘How was I to know? It did not have a label reading “drink me”.’ She sounded petulant again. ‘My face hurts. My hands, too.’

‘I will give you more poppy juice for the pain, but first you must answer one more question. Did you empty the bottle into the basin or did Ticey?’

‘I did.’

Rosamond nodded, glad to have confirmation that the tiring maid had told her the truth. She helped Lady Mary to sit up far enough to swallow a spoonful of the opiate.

‘I splashed the water onto my face with my hands,’ Lady Mary murmured. ‘I thought the coolness would be refreshing. I had been dancing.’ The drug acted quickly. She already sounded cup-shot.

‘Dancing? Alone in your chamber?’ The admission startled Rosamond.

‘I was happy.’ Lady Mary’s words slurred. ‘Going to a play. Talk to the queen.’

‘Did the pain begin at once?’

Tears leaked out from Lady Mary’s closed eyes. ‘I do not want to remember.’
